TV actress Ana Obregón made headlines in Spain after revealing that she had a baby through surrogacy in the US. However, she has since clarified that the baby was fathered by her deceased son.
Ana explained that before her son died of cancer at the age of 27, he expressed his wish to have a child of his own. As a result, before his death, a sample of his sperm was frozen and stored in New York. The biological mother who carried the baby is reportedly a woman of Cuban origin living in Florida.
Ana's initial revelation sparked controversy and criticism from left-wing government ministers, with the Equality Minister condemning surrogacy as "a form of violence against women." However, Ana argues that surrogacy is a form of assisted reproduction that is legal in many other countries.
Although surrogacy is illegal in Spain, adoption of a child born abroad is lawful. Ana sees the baby as her mission and has legally adopted her, despite being biologically her grandmother. The baby, named Ana Sandra, will be registered at the Spanish consulate before they fly to Madrid.
While some commentators have raised ethical concerns about Ana interpreting her son's wishes and adopting her grandchild, there is nothing illegal about the situation. Aless Lequio's father, Alessandro Lequio, has declined to comment on the baby's birth.
